WHY DO EASTERN CAPE ARTISTS TRAVEL TO JOHANNESBURG TO RECORD THEIR ALBUMS?
13-11-2014
EASTERN CAPE artists
have traveled all the way to Johannesburg and Durban to record their albums
over the past years up to date. I would ask myself
this question, why do they have to travel so far? But i would end up with an
assumption that, it’s probably
because the Eastern Cape lacked good resources such as best studios and
professional producers at the time, that’s what I thought.
Let me take you back on
memory lane a little. Do you still remember the gospel groups that paved the
way musically when we were kids in the Buffalo City and the Eastern Cape at
large, the “Youth With Mission” with Khanyisa Nkantsu Sabuka, Pastor Malibongwe
Gcwabe as lead vocalists, the “Lord Comforters” with the likes of Veliswa Skei and the rest not forgetting
Lusanda Mcinga from Umtata, Kholeka Sosibo-Willowvale and many more. I also attest to this " Jo-burg recording saga", I am no exception either. I recorded my fist
album in Johannesburg with Sizwe Zako as my producer, Managed by Pastor
Khaya Mayedwa, but we are not talking about me here, so we will probably elaborate on my story some other time hey ;)
Okay I bet you would
agree with me when I say, most prominent artists we know today are from the Eastern Cape, the likes of Simphiwe
Dana from Butterworth, Zahara - King Williams Town “ePhumlani,” Siphokazi
Qamarana- Lusikisiki, Loyiso and Zwayi Bala- Uitenhage, Unathi Msengana-
Grahams Town to name a few.
HOUSE OF MELODIES: The Miriam Makheba Perfoming
Arts Center. AVC (Audio Visual Centre) East London,
was launched in Buffalo City Municipality, 04 September 2006.

Now I have noticed that the Eastern Cape has improved as compared to the early 90's. We have quite classy studios in the Buffalo City now, such as the AVC- Miriam Makheba Centre,
MORE STUDIOS: Dolce Sounds in Southern
Wood, East London. Picture: Google.
The Buffalo City has brilliant producers to top it off, the likes of Gugu Mbuku, Gary Ndlovu, Mandisi Luxomo, Vovee Batala, “Moberg” Mgqobele and many more. I must say that there are artists who record their albums locally, "Chosen" Group, "STAND" Nosiviwe Mabona released a new album recently that was recorded at the Miriam Makheba Studio (AVC), and you can search her song "Thetha" on YouTube.
I don’t get why Artists
from the Buffalo City go to Johannesburg for recording till to date.., is it because of those lucrative offers that fall on our lap, or we
still lack n one way or another.
Perhaps i'm a little shallow,
CAN SOMEONE ENLIGHTENED
ME ABOUT THIS MATTER PLEASE!
